The Single African Air Transport Market – Pilot Implementation Project (SAATM-PIP) initiative was launched during the 23rd YD Day Anniversary Event on the 14th November 2022 in Dakar, Senegal, under the theme “ACCELERATION OF AIR TRANSPORT LIBERALIZATION IN AFRICA TO IMPROVE CONTINENTAL CONNECTIVITY AND INTEGRATION”. 14 African Ministers of Transport/Aviation launched and were present at the event. The aim of the project is to accelerate the implementation of the YD leading to the full and sustainable implementation of SAATM. Today, twenty (20) SAATM
Member States who have the requisite enablers have committed to embracing the full implementation of the YD/SAATM. The States are: Cabo Verde, Cameroun, Central African Republic, Congo Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Togo, and Zambia.

The 24th Anniversary of the YD event will be held under the theme “Africa Wants to Fly”. The event will be hosted by H.E Festus Keyamo (SAN), Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, while H. E Affoh Atcha-Dedji, Honourable Minister of Air, Rail and Road Transport of Togo (Champion State of SAATM) will be the Special Guest of Honour.

One of the objectives of the event is to present and evaluate the progress made in the implementation of the YD/SAATM under the SAATM-PIP initiative and to further reinforce the recent Decision of the Ministers during the Fourth Ordinary Session of The Specialized Technical Committee on Transport, Transcontinental and Interregional Infrastructure, and Energy (STC-TTIIE) held in Zanzibar, Tanzania from 12-15 September 2023, wherein they reiterated the Decision of the 2nd Extraordinary STC-TTIIET urging the remaining 18 Member States to sign the Solemn Commitment to join SAATM and equally urged all SAATM Member States to join the Pilot Implementation Project (PIP) initiative to accelerate the implementation of SAATM.
